"And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth" (Genesis 9:1). To Jews life is of infinite value; one moment of life is equal to living seventy years. Thus Jews are permitted to desecrate the Sabbath to save the life of one who will live only for a short while. All biblical and rabbinic commandments are set aside for the overriding consideration of saving a life.
